Indigenous Peoples Month and the 27th Year Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) Commemoration

The October celebration will culminate the activity of honoring the Indigenous Peoples who are prime movers and champions for IPRA, practitioners and advocates in the preservation/safeguarding of the Indigenous Peoples culture and transfer of indigenous knowledge, systems and practices to younger generations.

Part of the activities is a showcase of Indigenous Peoples Cuisine Photo Exhibit, which celebrates the rich cultural heritage and identity of Indigenous Cultural Communities reflected in their distinct food preparation techniques, ingredients, and cooking styles. The photo exhibit will highlight the role of food, not only as sustenance but, as an essential part of cultural identity and tradition, passed down through generations.

This yearly commemoration is very important to promote and protect the rights and culture of the Indigenous People in the country. The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act was passed 27 years ago to recognized the rights of our native citizens.

The theme of this year's observance. “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalan” or “Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge,” the month-long festivity underscores key areas that identifies ICCs/IPs, specifically their contributions in agriculture and food security. This knowledge encompasses diverse areas such as sustainable agriculture, traditional medicine, and environmental stewardship. Recognizing and protecting this knowledge is crucial for the survival of indigenous cultures and the overall wellbeing of our society.

In conclusion, the National Indigenous Peoples Month 2024 is an important opportunity to celebrate the rich heritage of our indigenous communities and recommit to the full implementation of IPRA. Let us all participate in the activities and continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of our indigenous.
